Culture Shock // Kulttuurishokki

I decided to write about culture shock today because I realized it's been three months since I packed my bags and came here in Abu Dhabi. Of course it's a quite short time considering the fact that I have been in Finland couple of days and our parents have been visiting us here during those three months but still I wanted to write about this topic.

After Googling some information about Culture Shock I found out following: There are commonly four steps and those are honeymoon, real culture shock, acceptation and adaptation. It's typical that first you are happy and excited about everything but after some time has passed you start feeling tired and irritated towards all the new things. After that step you are able to accept and adapt the new culture and its habits.

Based on information that I found it's typical that honeymoon period starts almost immediately or at least within a couple of months when you have arrived in to the new country. So based on that I should be undergoing the honeymoon period or the real shock. In my opinion it's quite hard to say which step it is in my case or am I having it at all. I'm living almost the same kind of life here as I did live back in Finland. Days go by studying, exercising and doing some housework. Also I have started some new projects such as this blog so I'm not bored at all. So all things considered my lifestyle is pretty ordinary here and that's why I find it hard to tell if I'm experiencing the culture shock.

On the other hand the standard of living is almost the same here than in Finland. You can drink tap water, apartments are quite similar, you find same groceries here from the stores, the environment is clean, I feel safe in here et cetera. If we had moved in a place where the standard of living wouldn't be this good I think I would have reacted differently.

Also I think that I'm very adaptable because I have been able to see different lifestyles and cultures in different countries. Because of this I have many baselines I can think and compare and definitely it gives me more perspective.

At least not yet I haven't experienced the real culture shock in here but I know it also might come later. We will see that in the future. I was thinking that I could write about this topic again when we have been living here six months and I can tell about this as an real expat perspective.
